One of the most highly allergenic contaminants found indoors is house dust, often heavily contaminated with the fecal pellets of house Dust Mites. Estimates are that dust mites may be a factor in 50 to 80% of asthmatics, as well as in countless cases of eczema, hay fever, and other allergic ailments.

Dust is also made up of a variety of things from blowing dirt, bacteria, pollen, pollutants, mold, animal dander, hair, decomposing insects, fibers, dryer lint, insulation, and mostly, skin flakes that humans shed.

At least 14 Canadians are killed each year in poisoning related to faulty or improperly ventilated heating systems.

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes. Carbon monoxide is produced whenever any fuel such as natural gas, oil, wood or charcoal is burned. If appliances that burn fuel are maintained and used properly, the amount of CO produced is not hazardous. However if appliances are not working properly or are used incorrectly, dangerous levels of CO can result. Have your furnace serviced by a qualified professional every year.

If you experience any symptoms, go outside into the fresh air. Call 911, your local fire department or your local Gas Company from a neighbour's house.

CO poisoning symptoms include:

  • severe headaches, dizziness, mental confusion, nausea and faintness
  • many symptoms may be similar to flu and food poisoning
