The first ever national Survey of Household Energy use in Canada showed that while many homeowners have taken steps to improve the thermal envelope of their homes, there is still significant potential for energy-efficiency upgrades, especially since 69% of Canadian homes were built more than 17 years ago, when building codes were less stringent from an energy consumption viewpoint. The average ages of Canadian appliances (including furnaces and hot water tanks), were bought 10 or more years ago and consequently lack the most recent energy-efficient devises available today. This indicates significant potential for improved appliance energy efficiency in Canadian Households.
Everyone uses natural gas and electricity differently, but most people use about the same amount of energy for the basics like heating and cooling, water heating and lighting.
Your home’s actual energy use is unique. Even identically designed homes can have dramatically different energy usage. It all depends on the way you use energy in your home and the age of your appliances.
