- Next
to your heating and air-conditioning, your hot water tank is the
biggest energy user in your home. Showering, bathing, washing clothes
and dishes drain your water heater - and it's fuel.
- The
number one threat to energy efficiency and tank life is sediment
accumulation.
- A
setting of 120° F or higher will actually
increase the rate of corrosion on
internal fittings and other surfaces, reducing the life of your tank.

- Tip#1
-
Use a water heater wrap. Even when your water heater is not in use,
it loses heat through the tank wall. Wrapping the unit keeps the
water hot and reduces heat loss.
- Tip#2
- Use low flow showerheads and faucet aerators to cut the flow throughout
your home, and still have all the water you need.
- Tip
#3
- Replace any hot water tank that is 10-12 years or older. By replacing
a 15 year old tank with a new hot water tank, you can
have more hot water at a savings as the new water heater will
be 15 - 30% more efficient.
-
Tip#4 -
Wash clothes in cold water when you
can. The clothes washer is second only to bathing in consumption of
hot water. A standard size clothes washer uses about 25 gallons of
hot water when operated in hot wash/warm rinse mode.
Storage Tank Water Heaters
Storage tank water heaters are by far the
most common and affordable type. These heat and store water in a tank constantly so
that hot water is available at any time. Because of this, you are
heating and re-heating un-used water, and using more energy to keep the
water in the tank at its set temperature.

Tankless On-Demand Water Heaters
These systems do not have a storage
tank. They heat water only when it is needed. These tanks, however,
can cost 2-3 times more than a conventional water tank, must be
mounted on an outside wall, and utilize a different exhaust system.
Don't expect the water to be instantly hot. In fact, it can
take a little longer to get hot since it has to turn on and heat the
water on the fly.
